Dr David Wright holds the endowed chair (Hannah Chair) in the history of medicine at McMaster and is jointly appointed as Associate Professor in the Department of History and the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences (Faculty of Health Sciences). Dr Wright was educated at McGill University (Montreal) and the University of Oxford (Great Britain). He specialized in the history of medicine at the Wellcome Trust Unit for the History of Medicine, University of Oxford, where he also held an honorary appointment in the Faculty of Modern History and a Junior Research Fellowship at Linacre College. In 1996, he was appointed Wellcome Lecturer at the University of Nottingham before returning to take up his position at McMaster. David’s unique position has enabled him to teach in several programs on campus, including History, Health Sciences (BHSc) and Health Studies. Most recently, he has also held the position of Associate Dean, Faculty of Humanities.
Dr Wright has had an active research career, with grants from various organizations and funding councils including: The Wellcome Trust; Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR); Social Sciences Research Council of Canada (SSHRC); and Associated Medical Services (Hannah Foundation for the History of Medicine) Toronto. He is the author and co-editor of seven books and two dozen peer reviewed articles and chapters on the history of mental health and psychiatry. He is currently writing a book on the history of Down Syndrome for Oxford University Press (under contract & forthcoming).
Dr Wright has recently embarked on a new research project (funded by SSHRC and AMS/Hannah) on the history of the globalization of health human resources in the second half of the twentieth century.
